Playmat status

Playmats are successfully on their way to the shipping hubs - we have three hubs for the playmats, and will do all the fulfillment from them.

Playmats for European backers have arrived last week, now it is time for the processing to have them arrive into Aimplify.  Playmats for the US backers are currently on their way - the current estimate for arrival is August 20th. VFI has shipped all the games with their playmats into their regions (Asia and Australia).

Also, don't forget that we still have some playmats available! So, don’t hesitate and go grab yourself one while there is still a chance! If you order the playmat now, it will be shipped together with the rest of them. The pre-order will be closing soon, so grab yourself one while they are still in stock.

Fulfillment update, playmats are ready, and let's take a look at shipping
almost 3 years ago – Mon, Jun 28, 2021 at 11:43:03 PM

Hi astronauts!

Let’s dive into some fulfillment news - for the past month, everything has been on the road. And finally, we have some touchdowns!

  •  Fulfillment process - US has started the fulfillment process!
  •  Frequently asked questions - Got some questions? We have answers!
  •  Playmat status - Playmats start their journey to shipping hubs
  •  Community creations - We have some reviews and an awesome creation by one of our backers!
  •  Shipping crisis - Let's take a look at what's going on around with shipping everywhere

Fulfillment process

EU: Fulfillment is done. If you have not received your package yet, please contact us at [email protected].

US: We are reporting a successful touchdown! Quartermaster Logistics (QML) has started the fulfillment  Friday (June 17th), and according to the latest news has already finished. People might be still awaiting packages from the local supplier, but if you don't receive your package soon, let us know via [email protected].

Canada: Fulfillment in Canada is done. Everything has been very smooth! If you have not received your package yet, please contact us at [email protected].

Asia and Australia: The shipment to VFI has been a little more precarious. As you know from the previous month, the containers on the boat had to be rearranged in one of the ports. Afterward, our games were halted for a customs inspection. Fortunately, everything has been resolved very quickly and the games have already arrived at VFI! At first, they have sent a batch of games straight to Australia, which has estimated hub arrival: 2021-07-24. For the latest info, feel free to head straight to VFI's fulfillment blog. Backers from these regions will receive their games with the playmats, as VFI has been able to pick them up locally.

UK: Fulfillment in the UK is nearly done. We have a couple of last packages that needed re-routing, but everything was smooth. If you have not received your package yet, please contact us at [email protected].

If you have any questions regarding your package, you can email us at [email protected].

Frequently asked questions

Currently, more people are receiving their games, so it is time to share our FAQ. If you have any question, there is a big chance that it has been already answered. You can go check out our official FAQ/Errata on BGG. But let us know if you have any additional questions!

I have a missing (and/or broken) component(s), what should I do?

You can always fill out our replacement form here. We will get in touch with you as soon as possible.

Where can I find the community translations?

You can find the rulebook and all the community translations here: http://boardcubator.com/games/spacerace-tbg/rules

Playmat status

Playmats have been produced, and we are already in the process of shipping them to the respective centers. VFI has already picked up the playmats for Asia and Australia locally, meaning they will be sending out the games with playmats together. Playmats for Europe are already on their way - the ship has embarked on Wednesday, June 23. And as for the US and Canadian shipments, the estimated departure date of playmats is July 6th - but stay tuned for more updates, as this may shift a little.

And also don't forget that we still have some playmats available! So, don’t hesitate and go grab yourself one while there is still a chance! If you order the playmat now, it will be shipped together with the rest of them. We'll be closing this pre-order next month!

Playmats are still available for pre-order

Community creations

Our amazing community strikes again! Immediately after receiving Space Race, Yves decided to create a player playmat. If you want an in-depth player guide during the game on your hand, then be sure to check out this player mat. It is available to download on BGG.

You can also check out this Dice Tower podcast episode, in which Mandi talks about her solo experience of Space Race!

Shipping crisis

As you probably already know by now, the world's shipment infrastructure has been left in a bit of shambles. You might have seen Quackalope's or BoardGameCo's video, or read one of the most recent articles. As Space Race is currently in the fulfillment phase, it has been affected by it, too. So, if you are interested in how the shipping crisis has been affecting us, then read on.  To be perfectly upfront from the beginning, we are not asking for anything - you do not have to worry about any further shipping fees. We simply want to talk about this situation as it affects the board game industry. And we also want to share our side of things to help you better understand what's been going on at the publisher's side of things.

So what has been happening with the shipping lately? To no one's surprise, COVID-19 has changed every step of the board game development - from the initial design stages to the final deliveries. As factories are flooded with big demand on productions, the ratio of import to export is unbearable. There are empty containers in Europe and US, which are just sitting there because nobody wants to ship empty containers, which leads to production factories having a shortage of containers - sounds crazy doesn't it? The whole shipping infrastructure wasn't built for that. The Suez Canal being stuck earlier this year certainly did not help anything either.

What can a board game publisher do in this situation? Well, there are only two options. Essentially, you can have an almost certain place on a ship for an absurd amount of money (up to a 600% increase, depending on your supplier). Currently, the rates for such containers can range up to 15 thousand dollars. The other option is to go a bit more economic (with a smaller price increase depending on your supplier), but your shipment may get delayed.

To be frank, both options are not perfect. If you decide to ship for higher prices, then you as a publisher have to find a way of covering the costs. This could possibly lead to nasty financial problems for your future, as not every publisher can find a sustainable way to get through this. If you ship the games more economically (which has still an increase in price), you are likely to get bumped to another ship for overcrowding reasons. In addition, at any time anyone who is prepared to pay these increased prices can jump ahead of everyone in the queue - this basically happens with other industries (such as electronics) where there are much higher margins on products. During the campaign, we have been very fortunate enough to receive such big support from you, which allowed us to be a bit more flexible during the increased freight prices.

There is no perfect way to solve this problem, as every publisher faces this situation a bit differently. Thankfully, we have got some amazing shipping partners with whom we are in contact and who are helping us find the best solutions. Nevertheless, not all publishers are that fortunate, but if you would like to help, there are still some things that you can do to support without any additional cost. Any support means the world to every publisher.

  •  Share your love for board games - Nothing makes us smile at the office more than seeing people enjoying our games. Bring that new game you got to a game night, share a picture of your playthrough, share your experiences of board games. This is what got me personally into the hobby in the first place, and I still love seeing it.
  •  Rate games on BGG - Like a game? Tell it to us! Don't like a game? Tell it to us, too! Don't hesitate to share your feelings about the game, be critical, be open to others' opinions, and most importantly discuss. Publishers are glad for every review.
  •  Be a part of the community - Almost every publisher has a Discord server, Facebook Page or Group, or a BGG thread for discussion. Don't hesitate and join in, we love seeing new faces and we (mostly) do not bite!
  •  Play games on TTS/Tabletopia - I have been gaming a lot on Tabletop Simulator recently, and I have tried countless new titles which I haven't had the chance to try before. Get your friends together, or even better - find new friends in the community, there are always people who are down for a session on TTS.
  •  Buy us a beer at Essen! - I know, I know... I have said in the beginning that we are in no need of support. But a beer after a shift at Essen booth? Well, I can't say no to that!
  •  Seek other ways to support creators and publishers who are in need - All the beer jokes aside, there are some publishers who have some difficulties in this situation. Please, try to be open and understanding, and help them to make their games a reality, too.

And that's it for this update! If you have any questions regarding the gameplay, fulfillment, or anything else, please don't hesitate to ask in the comments section. You can also look at our official FAQ/Errata list on BGG. I'm looking forward to the rest of your landing reports!

Fulfillment update, last chance to get a playmat, and wonderfully painted rockets!
almost 3 years ago – Fri, May 28, 2021 at 01:07:23 AM

Hi fellow astronauts!

How is everyone doing? We've some fulfillment news for you, and we have some painted rockets to show you!

  •  Fulfillment process - Fulfillment is going on, and you should be receiving your game soon
  •  Production status of playmats - New playmats are almost done, and now you have the last chance to get a playmat if you missed it before!
  •  Painted rockets - We worked with Branislav Lukacovic to present you some beautifully painted rockets
  •  Rate Space Race on BGG - Help us reach the top of the BGG rankings
Space Race is available on Tabletop Simulator!

Fulfillment process

Let's get ready for some more landing reports! Ships are arriving at other fulfillment centers, so let's get ready to play Space Race!

EU: Fulfillment is done. If you have not received a package yet, please contact us at [email protected]

US: Games have successfully arrived in Miami's port, and they are currently going through customs clearance. After that QML, will be able to pick the games up - they will be sending confirmation emails this Friday (28th May) - so if you have changed your address in the meantime, you'll be able to change it through them.

Canada: Canadian fulfillment has already started, you should receive an email regarding your pledge soon from UPS or Canada Post (if you have not received it already).

Asia and Australia: There was a small delay caused by the ship having to rearrange the load to a different ship in Singapore - we do not exactly know why this happened. VFI should receive the games next week/beginning of June. Once VFI has the games ready, they will update their blog to include Space Race, so you can track the fulfillment status there.

UK: ShipQuest has already started the fulfillment process, you should receive the tracking information in the upcoming days (if you have not received it already).

Rest of the World: Fulfillment in Europe is successfully done. We are currently looking at the best possible ways to fulfill South America (we'll send the games from one of our fulfillment centers). Depending on the length of the travel, the games should arrive in South America by the end of June.

If you are missing (and/or have any broken) component(s), please reach out to us via our replacement form here. We'll get in touch with you as soon as possible.

Production status of playmats

We have received the remastered playmat, and thus we are ending the playmat-gate! Everything is now perfect - the scaling is much better than before. You can take a look for yourself:

Remastered playmat ready to be produced
Remastered playmat ready to be produced

The production of playmats will be finished by the end of this week. We are already talking with fulfillment centers, and we'll have more information for you regarding the delivery timeline in the next update (currently the estimate is around August, depending on your region, but this is not final). One thing is certain - VFI will be able to pick up the playmats at LongPack for the Asia and Australia regions, so they will not have to journey across the sea.

If you need to change your address before the playmat delivers, we unlocked the option in BackerKit - so you can do it directly in there. If you need any assistance you can send us a KS message or email us at [email protected]. We'll be locking addresses based on the shipping regions - Asia and Australia addresses are going to be locked very soon (next week), other regions have more time.

We have one more exciting piece of news for you! Some of you have asked about the possibility of getting the playmat because you missed it earlier. Well, you now have a chance to get it! If you are interested in getting the playmat, you can pledge for it via this link. There is a very limited supply of the extra playmats, so don't hesitate this time. If you order the playmat now, it will arrive together with the rest of them. This pre-order will close in the middle of July (or until the supply lasts).

Painted rockets

And now for the most amazing part of this month's update - we have commissioned Branislav Lukacovic Miniatures to paint the rockets for Space Race! There are many great painters out there, but painting rockets is a bit different task than painting miniatures. Branislav went in headfirst because he is used to painting technical and historical miniatures. He has done a stellar job - just look at the little flags! We are afraid of playing with these little masterpieces. Make sure to show Branislav some love and follow his Facebook page if you are amazed by these rockets just like we are.

Let's look at the painted rockets! Please bear in mind that the rockets in the game come unpainted.

Ariane 5 of the ESA faction // Painted by Branislav Lukacovic
Saturn IB of the NASA faction // Painted by Branislav Lukacovic
Soyuz of the Soviet faction // Painted by Branislav Lukacovic
Long March 2F of the China faction // Painted by Branislav Lukacovic
Falcon Heavy of the Private Sector faction // Painted by Branislav Lukacovic

Aren't they amazing? They look even more majestic with the paint on them. If you decide to paint your rockets too, please share them with us - we'd love to see your creations! And of course, don't forget that you can make more of the rockets if you want since we have shared the STL files together with the print-and-play kit.

Fulfillment process continues and new Space Race content!
almost 3 years ago – Sat, Apr 24, 2021 at 04:20:55 AM

Hi astronauts!

We've got news about the ongoing fulfillment, we've published an official errata and FAQ, and we got some new content coming your way!

  •  Fulfillment process - We've got updated dates for the shipping
  •  Production status - Playmat-gate is close to being resolved
  •  Errata, FAQ, and replacements - Got a question? Might have an answer for you!
  •  New Space Race content! - How-to-play video, playthrough, and much more
  •  Rate Space Race on BGG - Helps us reach the top of the BGG rankings

Fulfillment process

The fulfillment process is still going in full swing, but almost all of the EU has been completely fulfilled according to our status update from Aimplify. As for the rest of the destinations, we've been hit with some delays - globally, there are many things that are increasing the delay for everyone, such as the Suez Canal block, and container ships being thoroughly overbooked - so, we have prepared an updated timeline of the shipping for you below. Please, be patient as in the current pandemic situation we cannot confidently guarantee that these dates will not change, everything is an estimate. We want to get the games to your door as fast as possible so that you can get them on the table! :)

EU: Fulfillment is 99% done, there are still some packages that were returned, or weren't picked up. But overall, you should already have the game in your hands.

US: We have been waiting in line for an available ship for a couple of weeks, but we finally got a date! The package for the US will get picked up at the end of the month (April 27th) and will arrive in the US in early May (May 9th). So the deliveries will happen in May. The ship's name is CMA CGM NERVAL and you can track its voyage over here.

Canada: Ship to Canada will embark in a couple of days and should be there by the end of the month, the deliveries will happen in May. The ship's name is MONTREAL EXPRESS and you can track its voyage over here.

Asia and Australia: Games have been on their way to the VFI fulfillment center since early April, but as the voyage is longer and there has been a precarious situation regarding the Suez canal, it will arrive in the middle of May. This means that some backers might receive their games in late May, but June fulfillment is more realistic. The ship's name is OOCL GERMANY and you can track its voyage over here.

UK: We have already received approval to send the games to the UK! We have ordered a van that will get the games there, and it is already on its way and should be there by the end of the week (this is the fastest way at the moment). There is a chance that some backers will receive their game in April, but May is more probable.

If you have any questions regarding your package you can send us an email at [email protected].

Production status

We've been having discussions with LongPack regarding the playmat-gate, and we have news for you on that front!

LongPack has been helpful and eager to resolve this issue as soon as possible. Currently, we are looking at possible ship bookings and dates, so we do not have a final estimate of the deliveries for you. Since the playmats will be going from the factory straight to the respective fulfillment centers, the waiting time will be much shorter than with the game itself.

Once we have some final dates we'll unlock your addresses, and you will be able to change your address (if you happen to move between getting the base game and the playmat). We'll let you know once this happens.

We'll be receiving a sample of the new playmat for approval, so we'll have more photos for you next time.

You might also ask yourself what happened with the manufactured playmats? As they are not up to our standards and we do not want to throw them away creating more waste, we looked for another solution. And that’s when our contact from Aimplify, Mathias, came forward and presented an awesome solution - the playmats will be used as landing zones for drones! Isn’t it crazy? Thank you, Mathias, for helping us create less waste! Once he sends us a photo of a drone landing, we'll share it with you :)

Errata, FAQ, and replacements

We have created an official errata and FAQ on BGG! You can check it out here. Some questions are frequently raised, so I will share them here with you too:

The bases of Falcon Heavy and Ariane 5 are switched

Each faction is color-coordinated - Private Sector is black, ESA is purple - and since their rockets look a bit similar to an untrained eye, you might have their bases switched. This does not affect gameplay at all, but you probably want to play with the correct rockets :)

I don’t have 5 projects of each category, is there anything wrong with my copy?

There is a misprint in the rulebook - the overall number of projects is correct (20 in the Base game + 5 in the Cold War expansion) but there are not 5 of each category. A and C categories have 4 projects, and B and D categories have 6 projects each.

I have an issue with the lid of the tray, what should I do?

There have been some changes made from LongPack in regards to final MPC production and how the lids are made. As the lids are cut out from the sheet, they are never 100% consistent, which is true for all board games production. Therefore, some copies might have an imperfect lid that scratches the inner bottom box.  As such it is only in the box bottom and has no effect on the gameplay. In regards to this,  I’d like to give a big shoutout to our community on BGG - especially to a fellow backer Thomas. He published a guide on BGG that will tell you how you can make a DIY fix for the lid, and keep your box bottom scratch-free!

Where can I find the community translations?

You can find the rulebook and all of the community translations here: http://boardcubator.com/games/spacerace-tbg/rules

We have also finished making the Czech community translation! It has already been added to the Drive folder.

I have a missing (and/or broken) component(s), what should I do?

You can always fill out our replacement form here. We will get in touch with you as soon as possible.

How to play and other new content

Branislav from the Nithrania channel has created an awesome how-to-play video of Space Race. Be sure to check it out if you don’t have time to read the rulebook.

What is it you say? You want another unboxing? Well, good news! I have one more unboxing for you! The most legendary solo player Mike DiLisio from Dice Tower has unboxed a copy of Space Race in the Daily Game Unboxing video!

Does ‘ducks in space’ sound interesting to you? Well, then quack onto this video, in which Jan and Jesse delve into some new games they can’t wait to play - and guess which one is in the pile. Quack!

Classroom get ready! Stella and Tarrant from the Meeple University did a great playthrough last weekend. Who won? I'll not spoil that one for you, as they say "anything can happen in a live stream".

Of course, we're looking forward to more Space Race content in the future! There is an upcoming solo playthrough from fabulous Mand tomorrowi, which you can know from the Dice Tower podcast. She'll be covering it on her YouTube channel To Die For Games, so you can stay tuned for that one!

Someone had painted their rockets, too! Don't hesitate to paint yours and show us what they look like. These are from our backers Charles and Dario, great job!

We've also commissioned someone to paint us these rockets in all of their glory (since I'm not that good of a painter myself yet). So let us know if you'd like to see a guide or some helpful tips on how to paint these beauties.

Shipping has started and playmats delay
about 3 years ago – Wed, Mar 24, 2021 at 12:45:23 AM

Hi astronauts!

This is a quick update to inform you about the shipping process and the status of playmats

  •  Shipping has started - Standby for landing in the EU sector!
  •  Playmats delivery delay - Playmats will arrive separately at a later date

Shipping started!

Both fulfillment centers for the EU and the CZ had started packing all of the copies on Monday. Make sure to let us know about your landing report! :)

As the sea transportation companies are currently overbooked, the current expectation for the US fulfillment is at the end of April. UK and RotW shipping is still happening in April too.

Playmats delivery delay

In the latest update, you could have seen an unboxing of Space Race and photos of final Space Race copies which turned out really awesome! A couple of days after the photoshoot we received the final copies of playmats which we were quite unhappy with.

The final version of the playmats has wrong dimensions and the components do not fit onto it in the way we imagined and constructed the board. The Mission tiles, Project boards, and the Rockets are simply a bit too big to fit onto their respective places, which is problematic. Especially with the Rockets, we carefully constructed the Progress tracker so that it would accommodate all of them without any big issues.

On the top are Long March 2F and Saturn IB (both base game rockets), and on the bottom are Saturn V and N-1 (both from Cold War expansion)

At first, we thought it is just an issue of shrinkage, but we took a closer look into it. It turns out that our factory (LongPack) changed the print data a bit between an approved version and the final version, resulting in the wrong dimensions of the playmat. We are not satisfied with it as this is an exclusive item, which was available only as an add-on to those who purchased it.

Example of how Project boards and Mission tiles do not fit onto the playmat

So, what happens next? We believe it is our mission to bring you, everyone, the best quality that we can and that this is not a quality that we'd be happy with. In conclusion, we have decided to restart the production of playmats.

What does it mean for me? Will I receive my game late?

The fulfillment of the games in the EU has already started, you will still receive your game according to the timeline. If you have ordered a playmat, it will not be included in the package. You will receive the playmats at a later date, once we have produced them again.

Do I have to pay anything extra?

No, there are no additional fees of any kind connected with this playmat delay.

When will the playmats arrive?

We are discussing with LongPack the production of the new playmats, so we have only estimates. The overall delay of the playmats is approximately 2-3 months - the main factor is when we'll be able to fit in the manufacturing scheme. That means EU backers will have to wait a little bit more than the rest. We'll be informing everyone about it as soon as we have more exact information.

Let's have a conversation over on Discord!

We have updated the links in the rulebook, so once you receive the game you can head straight to http://boardcubator.com/srtbg/tray for a picture of how you can organize the components inside of the tray. And of course, if you do not want to read the rulebook you can head to http://boardcubator.com/srtbg/howtoplay to watch Paul's playthrough of Space Race against 1 AI player. We'll be adding a how-to-play video into the playlist once we have it ready (approximately a week from now).

And that's it for this quick update. Let us know what you think about the playmat-gate. We are also looking forward to hearing your landing reports!

Take care and be safe,

Klobouk
